Important Guidelines for Pilgrims
Pilgrims are strongly advised not to pay more than the officially approved rates for services or provisions during the journey. It is essential to maintain discipline throughout the trek – move at a slow and steady pace to ensure your safety. Always follow the instructions issued by the designated Yatra Officer.
Various government departments, including the State Police, Health, Tourism and Food & Supplies, have deployed officials along the route to assist and guide pilgrims. It is important that you are in good physical health for this pilgrimage. Please undergo a thorough medical check-up to confirm your fitness for the journey.
Keep in mind that you will be crossing the Mahagunas Pass, which is located at an altitude of 14,000 feet above sea level. Therefore, it is important to be physically and mentally prepared for high altitude trekking. Obtain a medical fitness certificate before starting the journey and submit it to the designated registration authority in your area.

Do’s – Important Guidelines to Follow
Medical fitness is essential: Ensure you are physically and mentally prepared, as the yatra involves trekking at high altitudes up to 14,000 ft. Get a proper medical check-up done and carry a valid fitness certificate for registration.
Carry adequate winter clothing: Pack warm clothes such as sweaters, woollen trousers, gloves, caps, windcheaters, and rain protection. Also carry essentials like a sleeping bag, waterproof blanket, torch with extra batteries, and a sturdy walking stick.
Guidelines for women: It is advisable to avoid sarees during the trek. Comfortable clothing like pants or salwar suits is recommended for ease of movement.
Pack essential food items: Carry ready-to-eat items like biscuits, dry fruits, candies, milk powder, and other light snacks. Also keep a refillable water bottle, plate, glass, and spoon.
Ration & firewood availability: Basic ration and firewood are available at various camps along the route on a paid basis for your convenience.
Use authorized services only: Hire ponies, porters, or dandi services only from registered providers with official identification and fixed government rates.
Keep your belongings with you: Ensure that your luggage and food items carried by ponies remain with you throughout the journey to avoid inconvenience.
Maintain trekking discipline: Walk at a steady pace and strictly follow instructions given by officials from police, tourism, health, and other departments.
Carry sufficient cash: Keep enough cash for accommodation, food, and other personal expenses during the journey.
Medical support: Free medical facilities are available along the route, but carrying a personal first-aid kit is highly recommended.
Avoid alcohol strictly: Consumption or carrying of alcohol during the yatra is strictly prohibited and may lead to penalties.
Don’ts – What to Avoid During the Yatra
- Avoid overexertion: Do not push your body beyond its limits, especially while climbing steep or difficult stretches. Take breaks when needed.
- Do not ignore warning signs: Never rest or stop in areas marked as landslide-prone, avalanche zones, or other hazardous locations.
- Maintain trekking discipline: Avoid overtaking others or breaking the movement flow, particularly on narrow or risky paths.
- Do not overpay for services: Always stick to the government-approved rates for ponies, porters, accommodation, ration, and firewood.
- Avoid unregistered services: Do not hire pony owners, porters, or dandi carriers without proper registration and official identification.
Important Note
Elderly individuals, those who are physically unfit, unwell, or not properly equipped for cold weather may not be allowed to continue beyond Pahalgam.
All pilgrims must carry a valid registration card. Entry beyond the checkpoint will not be permitted without proper registration.
