Divine Amarnath Darshan

The Sacred Story of Amar Katha

The divine tale of Amarnath begins with Lord Shiva, also known as Bhole Nath, who holds the ultimate truth of life and immortality. It is believed that Goddess Parvati once questioned Lord Shiva about the mystery of his eternal existence and the reason behind the garland of skulls he wore.

With deep curiosity, Maa Parvati asked why she had to take birth again and again while Shiva remained immortal. Moved by her devotion and determination, Lord Shiva decided to reveal the sacred secret of Amar Katha—the story of immortality. However, this knowledge was too powerful to be heard by any living being.

To ensure complete secrecy, Lord Shiva searched for a hidden and isolated place. He finally chose the holy Amarnath Cave, far away from the world, where no life could exist. This marked the beginning of one of the most divine journeys in Hindu mythology.

The Journey to the Holy Amarnath Cave

Before revealing the Amar Katha, Lord Shiva left behind everything connected to the material world. At Pahalgam, he left his loyal vehicle Nandi. At Chandanwari, he released the moon from his matted hair. Near Sheshnag Lake, he freed the serpents, and at Mahagunas Parvat, he left Lord Ganesha behind.

As he moved closer to the cave, at Panjtarni, he abandoned the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and sky—symbolizing complete detachment from worldly existence. It is believed that Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati performed the cosmic Tandav dance, representing the destruction of illusion and ego.

Inside the sacred Amarnath Cave, Lord Shiva entered deep meditation and created a divine fire to ensure no living being remained nearby. He then began narrating the Amar Katha to Maa Parvati. However, unknowingly, a single egg hidden beneath the deer skin survived.

From that egg, a pair of pigeons was born, who listened to the entire Amar Katha and became immortal. Even today, many pilgrims claim to witness this mystical pair near the holy ice Shivling, making the journey even more divine and miraculous.
